Excerpt from The Cincinnati Medical News, Vol. 12: June, 1879; Vol. 8, New Series Typhoid fever is usually ushered in with rigors, chilli ness, or diarrhea. Now and then it may be ushered in somewhat suddenly, but generally it comes on insidious ly, so much so sometimes that the patient has difficulty in stating just on what day his illness began. In num bers of cases there will be felt, for some days. Only a feel ing of malaise, attended with a feeling of weariness in the limbs, and a disposition to be on the feet as little' as possible. The appetite is poor or fails altogether. In other cases the patient suffers from irregular chills and flushes of heat. The pulse is increased in frequency, the limbs ache, there is headache, redness or coating of the tongue. During the day there will be, perhaps, a ten deney to drowsiness, and at night to wakefulness, rest lessness, and dreaming. With the other symptoms there are usually associated, or very soon follow, and generally form the most striking phenomena of the early symptoms, vomiting and diarrhea, with abdominal pain and tender ness in the umbilical region. Now and then they are not present. As has been intimated, feebleness is usually marked from the beginning of the disease, and not unfrequently the patient-is not able to leave the bed during the first week, but in other cases, while the symptoms gradually increase in severity, he may be able to be up more or less, and even walk around dressed. If it happen that the bowels were any ways constipated at first, their con dition will usually be changed before the end of the week. They will be found at this time very sensitive to anything tending to irritate them. If an emetic be given, it will sometimes produce severe diarrhea. So that care must be employed as to the character of the medicines administered - it being far more easy to set up a profuse diarrhea than it is to check it after it has been started. Excerpt from The Cincinnati Medical News, 1880, Vol. 13: Vol. IX, New Series Suppose a person has a perforation in the membrana tym pani, and suppose the action of the atmosphere should irri tate and cause an in ammation of the mucous membrane, wherein lies the danger? As we have already stated, the roof of this cavity consists of a thin septum of bone, which lies in juxtaposition with the membranes of the brain upon one side, and the mucous membrane of the tympanum on the other. An in ammation of the latter membrane may continue until it \destroys or perforates this septum, and then produce meningitis or cerebral abscess with fatal results; or, the in ammation may extend to the mastoid cells and then destroy the septum, the latter being more prolific of cerebral trouble. In some cases, this in amma tory action may continue for months and years without producing anything more than an annoying otorrhoea. The formation of pus is due to a modification and pro liferation of the cellular elements, the amount produced being dependent upon the vascular supply and the degree of stasis. As fast as this proliferation takes place, it is thrown Off in the shape of an otorrhoea. This corrects the false premise referred to in the first part of this arti cle. This process may continue indefinitely, progressing no further than a chronic otorrhoea, and the patient finally be carried off by intercurrent trouble alter the lapse Of years.
