It was used last year in the Palace Gardens, Armagh, in a ribbon between scarlet geranium and blue lobelia, and was considered to produce a fine effect. B. S. Williams, Is. 6d. each. Aqathea Celestis Varieoata.--We called attention to this beautiful variegated plant when first brought out by Mr. Bull. It is now generally distributed through the trade, and obtainable at a cheap rate. The leaves are wholly stained with creamy and amber tints, and the blue flowers are freely produced. It is an important acquisition. CoLEUsVERSCHAFFELii.--Connoisseurs in foliage plants should try this superb plant out of doors this season. We believe it will answer admirably for ribbon lines, and if so, will far surpass in beauty all the pcrillas, orachs, and amaranths, the foliage being richly coloured with scarlet crimson and orange, blended together. For greenhouse culture it is unequalled, and requires no more care than a balsam, which it somewhat resembles in constitution. Herbclisibm Atro-rurens.--A magnificent composite from Mexico, well adapted to grow for exhibition in collections of greenhouse plants. The cordate leaves are of a, deep bronzy green, the mid ribs and leaf-stalks rich crimson, the flowers in large corymbs of delicate lilaa purple, the beauty of which is intensified by the vivid crimson of the flower-stalks. Ve are not aware if it has yet found its way into any English collections, but as it was introduced to Ghent by M. Verschaffelt, it will find its way here in time, and we advise plantgrowers to be on the look out for its appearance in nursery catalogues. Lapaoeria Rosea.--This finest of greenhouse climbers has been the subject...

The Floral World and Garden Guide, 1868 (Classic Reprint) available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Excerpt from The Floral World and Garden Guide, 1868 N ow, I must tell you that I have before me a list of about three hundred species and varieties of plants that flower in Spring, and in looking through it I am constrained to say it must have been pre pared by a man (or a monster) who clutched at names and was ignorant of things. I might reproduce that list, and in so doing perpetrate a dreadful wrong against all those readers who happened to put faith in it. The author of the list enumerates crocuses so many, that a man must be crocus mad and a downright croaker who would take a moment's trouble to obtain any of them; and then, when we look into the list, we find a lot mentioned that are really not to be obtained at all, and are not to be found even in botanical gardens. So he goes ou, to use an expression of the re nowned A. W., making an ass of himself generally. In'this same list are nine species of Trilliums. N ow it is true they are charming plants; but nine-tenths of simple people who should buy and plant them would be sure to lose them, and that very remark suggests the desirability of a paper on Trilliums shortly. The moral of these remarks is, that mere lists are of no value at all; people want to know first of good things that may be obtained without difficulty, and that may be grown anywhere. What they want after that desire is satisfied does not much matter. Let us address our selves to the subject of spring flowers for everybody and every where.
