The Gospel of John in Christian History, (Expanded Edition) available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. This collection of essays on John by J. Louis Martyn gathers four additional Johannine essays into a single volume, augmenting the three published earlier in The Gospel of John in Christian History (1978). In addition to the essays published in the third edition of History and Theology in the Fourth Gospel (2003), these two volumes preserve for later generations the complete set of Martyn’ published works on John. In a timely way, the publication of this volume follows the 50th anniversary of the publication of History and Theology (1968), which John Ashton regarded as the most important single Johannine monograph since the commentary of Rudolf Bultmann. It also follows the 40th anniversary of the publication of his second Johannine book, which serves as the core of the present volume. —From the Editor’s Preface

The Literary Devices in John's Gospel available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. As an interdisciplinary forerunner of the new literary approaches to gospel narratives over the last four decades in New Testament scholarship, the revised and expanded monograph by David Wead makes a timely contribution to the advancement of those studies. Rooted in comparative analyses of contemporary Hellenistic and Jewish literary techniques, and drawing from the best of Continental scholarship, Wead not only points Johannine scholars to relevant ancient resources, but his analyses prepare the way for fresh interpretations of John's story of Jesus today. Published originally in Switzerland, this book was overlooked by many scholars, to the detriment of their work. However, in addressing such themes as John's post-resurrection point of view, the Johannine sign, the Johannine double meaning, irony in the Fourth Gospel, and metaphor in the Fourth Gospel, Wead's work is now available to new generations of scholars, who will find his work both instructive and provocative. This newly revised and expanded edition, edited by Paul Anderson and Alan Culpepper, not only includes a new epilogue by David Wead, featuring new reflections and insights, but it also includes an expansive overview of the literature—before and after Wead’s work—including a helpful assessment of Wead’s monograph in service to ongoing Johannine scholarship. No serious study of Gospel literary features, devices, and strategies can afford to overlook this important book!

The Gospel of John in Christian History available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Where are we to locate the Gospel of John within the complex history of early Christian thought and life? Can we discern, for example, some of the patterns of christological confession which immediately preceded the Evangelist's own labors, and are we thus able to see more clearly where John's remarkable and majestic views of Christ fit into the early history of christology? What kind of community was the church in which John lived and worked? Can we identify some of the formative events in its life, and piece together at least a partial picture of the community's history, so as to see how it was related both to the synagogue and to other Christian groups of its time? If we are to read and interpret the Gospel of John in its own setting, questions of this sort must be clearly posed, and they must be rigorously discussed on the basis of the text of the Gospel itself. The task is both crucial and demanding, and the present volume makes an important contribution to it by focusing on the issues of christology and ecclesiology. If other Johannine interpreters find here an angle of vision which is truly constructive for their own labors, the purpose of the volume will be fulfilled.

In this third volume, an international group of experts demonstrate over two dozen ways in which John contributes to an enhanced historical understanding of Jesus and his ministry.
