The Ideal Student: Deconstructing Expectations in Higher Educatio N available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. This book presents an exciting and novel approach to explore the concept of the ‘ideal student’. Written in the context of higher education, the concept aims to promote a more transparent conversation about the explicit, implicit and idealistic expectations of university students. It would address concerns that implicit rules or unspoken practices can result in diverse but patterned student experiences, widening social inequalities. The concept of the ideal student can provide students, especially those less familiar or confident with higher education, with a better and clearer understanding of what is valued, expected and rewarded at university. With increasing student diversity, there is an urgent need for greater openness and awareness of the different expectations and ideals of students. The key questions explored include: •How is the ideal student imagined and envisioned? •To what extent are these constructions realistic and achievable? •Are certain students more likely to aspire, identify or embody these ideal characteristics? •Are there any features of the ideal student that are widely shared and recognised? •How do people from different social backgrounds construct their ideal student? •How can staff support students to develop desirable characteristics for university? A number of issues are unpacked as the book discusses the nuances of what it means to be a university student. The Ideal Student is written for a general audience and will be of particular interest to those working or studying in higher education, especially staff, students and senior leaders. "This clearly written and engaging book will be of interest to HE practitioners, students and researchers who want to support more inclusive learning environments." Professor Louise Archer, Karl Mannheim Professor of Sociology of Education, UCL Institute of Education, UK "This is a rigorously informed and illuminating reconsideration of the notion of the Ideal Type of student in higher education." Professor Gill Crozier DPhil, FRSA, University of Roehampton, UK "Based on solid empirical work, combining qualitative and quantitative data, the book offers an insight into the perception of whom and what the ideal student is." Professor Lars Ulriksen, Department of Science Education, University of Copenhagen, Denmark "In their well-written and clearly structured volume Wong and Chiu summarise valuable data-driven research that sheds light on the important question of what characterises the ideal student." Stefan T. Siegel & Tobias Böttger, University of Augsburg, Germany Billy Wong is an Associate Professor in Widening Participation at the Institute of Education, University of Reading. Tiffany Chiu is Senior Teaching Fellow in Educational Development at the Centre for Higher Education Research and Scholarship and Programme Director for the PG Cert in University Learning and Teaching at Imperial College London. Perspectives on Enhancing Student Transition Into Higher Education and Beyond available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Transition and change are part of everyone’s life. In the context of higher education, there are multiple points where students will undergo transition. This includes the move from secondary and further education or elsewhere into higher education, where students move from school or college to university. As students near the completion of their studies, they must make decisions about career or further study options, which again necessitates transition. In addition, different cohorts of students such as those from a low socio-economic background, international students, and students facing additional barriers due to gender, ethnicity, or disability will face further transitions. Many students look forward to moving on and progressing with their studies and careers; however, transitions can be challenging, and enhanced support can ensure continued success for all. Perspectives on Enhancing Student Transition Into Higher Education and Beyond supports the various transitions that students entering higher education face throughout the entire learner journey. This book brings together best practice examples of how institutions have enhanced the support offered to address the transition challenges that students face throughout the learner journey before, through, and beyond the university environment. Covering topics such as collaborative teamwork, postgraduate education, and student engagement, this premier reference source is an excellent resource for faculty, administrators, professors, educational leaders, academic advisors, researchers, academicians, and more.

Contemporary Dynamics of Student Experience and Belonging in Higher Education available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. This timely and rigorous edited collection discusses complex processes related to student experience and belonging in contemporary higher education worldwide. It brings together a variety of recent research that explores contemporary undergraduate student experience in and of higher education. Drawing on the case studies from the UK, the USA, Israel and China and a variety of university settings, the chapters problematise the complex processes of developing a sense of belonging in contemporary universities that are increasingly diverse in terms of student population but also heavily marketised. Further, they draw attention to the effects of marketisation on the changing interpersonal relationships in student experience. Above all, the themes covered in this issue promote an understanding of student experience and belonging as a dynamic, relational and non-linear process, intersecting with pre-existing social inequalities as well as market dynamics that forcefully continue to reshape the sector and university practices. This book provides a timely and academically rigorous account of contemporary student experience and belonging in the global context of higher education. Contemporary Dynamics of Student Experience and Belonging in Higher Education will be a key resource for scholars, practitioners and researchers of higher education, education policy and leadership, educational studies and research, and anyone interested in understanding and supporting students. It was originally published as a special issue of Critical Studies in Education.
