"The Moral Instruction of Children" is a book written by Felix Adler, an influential American philosopher and educator, first published in 1892. The book focuses on the importance of moral education in the upbringing of children and offers practical guidance for parents, teachers, and caregivers on how to instill moral values in young individuals. Adler was a prominent figure in the Ethical Culture movement, which emphasized the importance of ethical living and social justice. Drawing from his experiences as an educator and his philosophical insights, Adler explores various aspects of moral instruction in the book. One of the central themes of "The Moral Instruction of Children" is the idea that moral education should be integrated into every aspect of a child's life, rather than being relegated to formal lessons or lectures. Adler emphasizes the importance of creating a nurturing and supportive environment where children can develop a strong moral compass through everyday experiences, interactions, and examples set by adults. Adler also discusses the role of storytelling, literature, and religious teachings in moral education, advocating for the use of narratives and parables to convey ethical principles in a relatable and engaging manner. He stresses the importance of fostering empathy, integrity, and critical thinking skills in children, encouraging them to reflect on their actions and the consequences of their choices. Furthermore, Adler addresses the challenges and dilemmas that parents and educators may encounter when teaching morals to children, providing practical strategies for addressing ethical conflicts and promoting ethical behavior. Overall, "The Moral Instruction of Children" is a thoughtful and comprehensive guide to moral education, reflecting Adler's belief in the power of ethical living to create a more just and compassionate society. The book remains relevant today as a source of inspiration and guidance for those seeking to instill moral values in the next generation.

Excerpt from The Moral Instruction of Children Moral education is everywhere acknowledged to be the most important part of all education; but there has not been the same agreement in regard to the best means of securinglit in the school. This has been due in part to a want of insight into the two fold nature of this sort of' education; for instruction in morals includes two things: the formation of right ideas and the formation of right habits. Right ideas are necessary to guide the will, but right habits are the product of the will itself. It is possible to have right ideas to some extent without the corresponding moral habits. On this account the formation of correct habits has been esteemed by some to be the chief thing. But nu conscious habits - mere use and wont - do not seem to deserve the title of moral in its highest sense. The moral act should be a considerate one, and rest on the adoption of principles to guide one's actions. To those who lay stress on the practical side and demand the formation of correct habits, the school as it is seems to be a great ethical instrumentality.
