These travel lers' tales awakened ia the listener a resolution to be one day part of that strange outer world of action, and when he was scarcely sixteen he made his first appearance in public life. He had always been a leader among his playmates, and when in 1841 the temperance agitation grew into a national movement he was elected President of the State Youth's Temperance Society, and established a newspaper in the interest of the cause. This jour nal, called the 'enterprise', had for its motto The tree which does not blossom in the Spring will not bear fruit in Autumn.
