The untold story of how John Ramsey survived unspeakable tragedy and learned to hope again. Like the biblical Job, John Ramsey had it all-wealthy, social position, a loving family. And like Job, Ramsey was destined for great affliction, as many of the most precious things in his life were cruelly taken from him. First came the death of his eldest daughter in a car accident in 1992. Then, four years later, his beloved six-year-old, JonBenét, was murdered; Ramsey was the one who discovered her body, concealed in the basement of his family's home. The case drew international media attention, and-compounding Ramsey's woe-suspicion unfairly focused on Ramsey and his wife, Patsy. Although they were ultimately cleared of any connection with the crime, Ramsey's sorrows did not end. In 2006, Patsy died, at 49, of ovarian cancer. In this remarkable book, Ramsey reveals how he was sustained by faith during the long period of spiritual darkness, and he offers hope and encouragement to others who suffer tragedy and injustice.

"In this book, I address a perennial question: how does one find his or her way to the other side of suffering after a catastrophic disaster or other personal tragedy? The answer I suggest comes from coastal residents who survived the 2005 Atlantic Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Those who have lost homes and communities can provide an authentic and relatable example for other people faced with a life changing tragedy. In the first section, historic perspectives on disasters and their human impacts are considered. Two coastal parishes (counties) in south Louisiana are highlighted as a natural context for intergenerational knowledge of hurricanes and severe weather events. The Katrina experience is documented through entries in a survivor's personal journal. In the second section, six research-based principles of healing are presented: faith and humor, respect and gratitude, and acceptance and silver linings. Colorful case illustrations and direct quotes from Katrina survivors bring these principles to life. In the third section, post-disaster grief, the new normal after a disaster, and four obstacles that can delay or derail the process of healing are explored. Recovering daily routines and holiday observances provide direction as life goes on after a disaster. The voices of coastal residents who survived the Katrina tragedy offer a message of hope and healing after disaster for all who will listen. Their lives demonstrate quite convincingly that people can overcome catastrophic loss and regain a sense of joy in daily living in the years after a disaster or other life altering tragedy"--

'Required reading ... Brock Bastian expertly picks apart the fundamental idea that humans thrive when they approach pleasure and avoid pain, explaining why hardship sometimes yields richer lives that are laden with meaning, deep social connections, and unexpected bliss' Adam Alter, author of Drunk Tank Pink In today's culture, happiness has become the new marker of success, while hardships are viewed as personal weaknesses, or problems to be fixed. We increasingly try to eradicate pain through medication and by insulating ourselves from risk and offence, despite being the safest generation to have ever lived. Yet in his research, renowned social psychologist Brock Bastian has found that suffering and sadness are neither antithetical to happiness nor incidental to it: they are a necessary ingredient for emotional well-being. Drawing on psychology, neuroscience and internationally acclaimed findings from Bastian's own lab, The Other Side of Happiness encourages us to take a more fearless approach to living. The most thrilling moments of our lives are often balanced on a knife edge between pleasure and pain, whether it is finding your true love, holding your new-born for the first time, finishing a marathon or even plunging into an icy sea. This is because pain and the threat of loss quite literally increase our capacity for happiness, as Bastian reveals, making us stronger, more resilient, more connected to other people and more attuned to what truly matters. Pain even makes us more mindful, since in our darkest moments we are especially focused and aware of the world around us. Our addiction to positivity and the pursuit of pleasure is actually making us miserable. Brock Bastian shows that, without some pain, we have no real way to achieve and appreciate the kind of happiness that is true and transcendent.

"A cross between Carry On, Warrior and Everybody's Got Something, The Other Side of Yet is a powerful memoir about loss, faith, and the power of the human spirit. Starting her professional career as a producer at America's Most Wanted, Michelle Hord was no stranger to tragedy. But when the unimaginable happened in her own family, Michelle's entire life crashed down around her. As she sought out a new blueprint for how to live in this new world, The Book of Job became her anchor, with one verse in particular standing out: "Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him" Job 13:15 King James Version (KJV). For Michelle, the concept of that 'yet' became an essential part of her life--one shaped by loss, yet filled with hope. This powerful memoir takes readers on a journey about creating a life of goodness and grace in the face of loss, injustice, or hardship. Michelle isn't interested in prosecuting her marriage, dwelling on what happened to her daughter, or pointing to God as her only salvation. In the pages of The Other Side of Yet, she invites readers to share not just her story, but to draw inspiration from her strength, her will to create goodness, and her defiant faith"--
