It discusses the varied experiences of African Americans in sport and how their participation has both reflected and changed views of race.

Atlanta, Georgia is presented as a case study of the complex, biracial attitudes to fighters and their connection to developments in race relations. The significance of several other prominent black boxers is discussed, as are various forms of fighting involving blacks, in particular "battle royals".
