Humanity faces epoch-making challenges arising from the convergence of demographic, social, economic, ecological and political megatrends, which are additionally superimposed by the fatal COVID-19 pandemic and the new Cold War. Traditional economic thought is not able to cope with them. In the conditions of irreversible globalization, these challenges are met by the original concept of a new pragmatism – a peculiar interface between economic theory and practical economic policy for sustainable development. Grzegorz W. Kolodko, an outstanding economist with a world-wide reputation, a public intellectual, successful politician and a globetrotter who has explored the world – clearly writes what is happening in the economy and why, on its links with society and politics, environment, security, culture and technology. The work devotes due attention to the rise of China and the consequences of its global expansion. The unique interdisciplinary approach to the issues discussed makes this book a fascinating read for all professionals interested in the future of a rapidly changing world.

Why economists' attempts to help poorer countries improve their economic well-being have failed. Since the end of World War II, economists have tried to figure out how poor countries in the tropics could attain standards of living approaching those of countries in Europe and North America. Attempted remedies have included providing foreign aid, investing in machines, fostering education, controlling population growth, and making aid loans as well as forgiving those loans on condition of reforms. None of these solutions has delivered as promised. The problem is not the failure of economics, William Easterly argues, but the failure to apply economic principles to practical policy work. In this book Easterly shows how these solutions all violate the basic principle of economics, that people—private individuals and businesses, government officials, even aid donors—respond to incentives. Easterly first discusses the importance of growth. He then analyzes the development solutions that have failed. Finally, he suggests alternative approaches to the problem. Written in an accessible, at times irreverent, style, Easterly's book combines modern growth theory with anecdotes from his fieldwork for the World Bank.

Chinism and New Pragmatism:How China’s Development Success and Innovative Economic Thinking Contribute to the Global Development 中国主义和新实用主义——中国的发展成就和创新型经济思维如何增进全球福祉 available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Grzegorz W. Kolodko proposed Chinism firstly, which is a unique combination of the power of the state, with the visible hand, and the market, with the invisible hand. The synergy of these two super-regulators of the economy, society and polity, combined with meritocracy, when rational people make rational decisions in a rational way, made a historical leap of civilization possible. The author begins this book with a concise overview of the essence of New Pragmatism, and then, from the perspectives of its determinants and the consequences and implications for other countries and for the world economy to assess China’s development process. He regards that Chinism is a syncretic economic system based on multiple forms of ownership of means of production, coming hand in hand with centralised power essentially based on meritocracy. The policy implemented by the state is competent and responsible. At the same time, it is oriented to fulfilling long-term strategic goals, to which medium-term and immediate goals are subordinated. Therefore, the author shares his prediction on the world economy: World’s future will increasingly depend on China’s future.Writing about the future, the author naturally refers to the development challenges that China will face in the decade of 2020s and beyond:China has already achieved a lot in its sustainable development, but there is still much to be done, especially in terms of reducing income inequalities and enhancing social cohesion, as well as environmental protection and creating a green economy.
