As well, it is about the tenth anniversary of the Columbine High School massacre and the gruesome carnage that is being planned in celebration of that incident; what was then the unimaginable mass murder which occurred on April 20, 1999. In this respect, it is also about the making of a monster. The story follows the lives of two families, the Mendez and the Phylers, from 1957 through 2009. Over the course of these 52 years their lives will occasionally intersect as they experience the progression of American culture from differing perspectives. They will witness 1950s affluence, the Free Speech Movement, the Kennedy and Martin Luther King assassinations, the Civil Rights Movement, Wars and war protests, 9-11, Gay Rights, the struggle for Gender equality, space exploration and unimaginable technological advancements, love and hate, and the perils of those fluctuating tides and economic oscillations. They will witness the best and worst inclinations of their species until they collide and intertwine on that fateful day, April 20, 2009.

This book was released on 2022-11-17. The Rupture available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. This is the inside story of a revolution in China policy, from Washington to Brussels, Berlin to New Delhi. The Rupture explains how many of the Western politicians, thinkers and business leaders closest to Beijing have become its sharpest opponents; how the COVID-19 pandemic dramatically accelerated this collective rethink; and why 5G represents the first test case as to whether China may win the battle for the future. Noted China expert Andrew Small offers a kaleidoscopic picture of a rivalry ranging far beyond ‘great power’ politics. He traces US efforts to recast relations with old allies, as Washington realises that it cannot confront China alone, charting Europe’s growing role in the technological and economic contest, and Beijing’s attempts to build a coalition of its own, from Moscow to Taliban-run Kabul. As competition grows between systems, the Western model itself is transforming—for China’s rise changes the balance of ideas as much as the balance of power.

Klein and the Rupture of Civilization write by Thomas Phillips. This book was released on 2017-07-07. T.E.D. Klein and the Rupture of Civilization available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Lauded by critics yet largely unappreciated by fans of horror and "weird fiction," T.E.D. Klein is considered one of the great horror writers, despite his scant body of work. His prose blends the mundane and the supernatural, conjuring the monstrous and the malign with accessible but charged discourse that breaks with the formulaic entries in the genre. Exploring a range of topics from religious fundamentalism and right wing extremism to fashionable pessimism and the rise of "digital humanities," the author argues that Klein's work is a prime example of what he terms "critical horror," a distinct subgenre that entertains while questioning individual and cultural complacency.

This book was released on 2016-12-24. Rupture available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. 1955. Two young couples move to the uninhabited, isolated fjord of Hedinsfjörður. Their stay ends abruptly when one of the women meets her death in mysterious circumstances. The case is never solved. Fifty years later an old photograph comes to light, and it becomes clear that the couples may not have been alone on the fjord after all... In nearby Siglufjörður, young policeman Ari Thór tries to piece together what really happened that fateful night, in a town where no one wants to know, where secrets are a way of life. He’s assisted by Ísrún, a news reporter in Reykjavik, who is investigating an increasingly chilling case of her own. Things take a sinister turn when a child goes missing in broad daylight. With a stalker on the loose, and the town of Siglufjörður in quarantine, the past might just come back to haunt them. Haunting, frightening and complex, Rupture is a dark and atmospheric thriller from one of Iceland’s foremost crime writers. ‘Traditional and beautifully finessed... morally more equivocal than most traditional whodunnits, and it offers alluring glimpses of darker, and infinitely more threatening horizons’ Independent • ‘Jonasson’s books have breathed new life into Nordic noir’ Sunday Express • ‘Bitingly contemporary in setting and tone’ Express • ‘A modern take on an Agatha Christie-style mystery, as twisty as any slalom...’ Ian Rankin • ‘A classic crime story seen through a uniquely Icelandic lens ... first rate and highly recommended’ Lee Child • ‘Chilling, poetic beauty... a must read!’ Peter James • ‘British aficionados of Nordic Noir are familiar with two excellent Icelandic writers, Arnaldur Indridason and Yrsa Sigurdardottir. Here’s a third: Ragnar Jónasson ... the darkness and cold are palpable’ Marcel Berlins, The Times For fans of Trapped, Yrsa Sigurdardottir, Agatha Christie and Ann Cleeves
