The Spell of the Holy Land (Classic Reprint) available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Excerpt from The Spell of the Holy Land There are two kinds of pilgrims to the Holy Land. Some journey to Palestine from religious motives, while others go because by nature they are wanderers over the face of the earth. It seems only fair to my readers to declare at the outset that I belong to the second class. I wanted to see Palestine because I had been assured that I would find there many things that were new, although this seemed to be something of a paradox, for many scientists and archaeologists believe that the northern part of Syria and Palestine possessed a civilization far more ancient than that of Egypt, and that in Baalbek's marble ruins are fragments dating back to the earliest prophets of the Hebrew Bible. Indeed, there is a tradition that the "altar of the Lord," built by the son of Adam and Eve, was the beginning of that holy city. My informants told me that in Baalbek, that hoary city of Baal, I would find a kaleidoscope of colour and novelty which alone would cause enthusiastic impressions of Egyptian Thebes to fade from my mind. Excerpt from The Spell of China I like to read books of travel, an old lady remarked to me, as she held a copy of The Spell of the Holy Land in her hand. I can read them and imagine that I am visiting the countries written about. But there is one fault that I have to find with all of them; they tell you about the trip from New York to Jerusalem, Zanzibar or Patagonia, but they never tell how much the trip costs. Why, I was thirty years old before I knew that it was possible to spend the summer in Europe without a small for tune. Download and read online ebook Defending the Holy Land write by Zeev Maoz. This book was released on 2009-04-15. Defending the Holy Land available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Defending the Holy Land is the most comprehensive analysis to date of Israel's national security and foreign policy, from the inception of the State of Israel to the present. Author Zeev Maoz's unique double perspective, as both an expert on the Israeli security establishment and esteemed scholar of Mideast politics, enables him to describe in harrowing detail the tragic recklessness and self-made traps that pervade the history of Israeli security operations and foreign policy. Most of the wars in which Israel was involved, Maoz shows, were entirely avoidable, the result of deliberate Israeli aggression, flawed decision-making, and misguided conflict management strategies. None, with the possible exception of the 1948 War of Independence, were what Israelis call "wars of necessity." They were all wars of choice-or, worse, folly. Demonstrating that Israel's national security policy rested on the shaky pairing of a trigger-happy approach to the use of force with a hesitant and reactive peace diplomacy, Defending the Holy Land recounts in minute-by-minute detail how the ascendancy of Israel's security establishment over its foreign policy apparatus led to unnecessary wars and missed opportunites for peace. A scathing and brilliant revisionist history, Defending the Holy Land calls for sweeping reform of Israel's foreign policy and national security establishments. This book will fundamentally transform the way readers think about Israel's troubled history. Zeev Maoz is Professor of Political Science at the University of California, Davis. He is the former head of the Graduate School of Government and Policy and of the Jaffee Center for Strategic Studies at Tel Aviv University, as well as the former academic director of the M.A. Program at the Israeli Defense Forces' National Defense College.
