"Heidi leads you on a guided tour through a subterranean world peopled by creative artists and sidewalk visionaries. Down winding tunnels and across gritty subway platforms, through her writing, both gritty and raw, she introduces you to an unforgettable cast of characters, not the least of whom is Heidi herself; a Renaissance woman, free spirit, and fearless adventurer in a world that millions pass through, but few know well. She takes you underground, where the music is the heartbeat of New York City. The chapters are informal, intimate diary entries, reading like a movie, jotted down at midnight after long sessions underground, so the book is a quick read, like a breathless ride on the uptown express.

This short and sweet--and astonishingly beautiful--book of photographs by the Tokyo-born and based Takashi Homma features 32 color images, primarily of the artist's daughter, although there are also some cityscapes and interiors that round out the story with perfect pitch. Homma offers an extremely well calibrated selection of images of his daughter from her first months to about age six: we see her sitting in her high chair; at a picnic; peeking through the car window; and taking some pictures of her own. Luminous, loving and relaxed, these portraits welcome the reader into the artist's inner world without giving anything away. "Tokyo and My Daughter," featuring one of the best family dog pictures ever, is published in the same series as Nieves' "Kim Gordon: Chronicles Vol.1, Mike Mills: Humans," and "Yukari Miyagi: Rabbit & Turtle." Homma has published his work in many international magazines and exhibited worldwide.

"In The Solitude of Ravens Masahisa Fukase's work can be deemd to have reached its supreme height; it can also be said to have fallen to its greatest depth ... If we attempted to peek any further into the abyss of solitude revealed ... we would probably end up being abstracted in to a side-sweeping storm or else into a flock of ravens covering the sky."--Akira Hasegawa

Download and read online ebook International Express write by Stéphane Tonnelat. This book was released on 2017-04-18. International Express available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Nicknamed the International Express, the New York City Transit Authority 7 subway line runs through a highly diverse series of ethnic and immigrant neighborhoods in Queens. People from Andean South America, Central America, China, India, Italy, Korea, Mexico, Pakistan, Poland, Romania, and Vietnam, as well as residents of a number of gentrifying blue-collar and industrial neighborhoods, fill the busy streets around the stations. The 7 train is a microcosm of a specifically urban, New York experience, in which individuals from a variety of cultures and social classes are forced to interact and get along with one another. For newcomers to the city, mastery of life in the subway space is a step toward assimilation into their new home. In International Express, the French ethnographer Stéphane Tonnelat and his collaborator William Kornblum, a native New Yorker, ride the 7 subway line to better understand the intricacies of this phenomenon. They also ask a group of students with immigrant backgrounds to keep diaries of their daily rides on the 7 train. What develops over time, they find, is a set of shared subway competences leading to a practical cosmopolitanism among riders, including immigrants and their children, that changes their personal values and attitudes toward others in small, subtle ways. This growing civility helps newcomers feel at home in an alien city and builds what the authors call a "situational community in transit." Yet riding the subway can be problematic, especially for women and teenagers. Tonnelat and Kornblum pay particular attention to gender and age relations on the 7 train. Their portrait of integrated mass transit, including a discussion of the relationship between urban density and diversity, is invaluable for social scientists and urban planners eager to enhance the cooperative experience of city living for immigrants and ease the process of cultural transition.
