It is claimed for it that it is the first and only practical guide written both for the buyer and seller, and compiled by an expert of long experience. The writer has made a study of The Values of Old English Silver and Sheffield Plate '7 for more than twenty years, during which time he has attended upwards of three thousand sales by auction, and has become acquainted with most of the principal dealers in this country, thereby enabling him to obtain information at first hand as to the prices paid by the trade. This is evidenced by the many thousand authentic records of sales by auction, and no less than one thousand 'six hundred separate valuations. The author may encounter adverse criticism for disclosing what some may possibly consider trade secrets, but he is confident that this will assist the honest dealer's trade, since increased knowledge and interest on the part of the collector must in the end conduce to increased business. At the same time such increased knowledge must, it is believed, operate as a check against those who by unfair methods tend to discredit a reputable and useful calling. The fair and reliable dealer having genuine specimens to sell, must wish the collector to be put on his guard, and would preferably do business with those who appreciate and have a good knowledge of the articles they desire to purchase, rather than with those who are devoid of any such appreciation and knowledge.
